Every clean street, well-maintained park, functioning traffic signal, repaired roadway and welcoming public space plays an important role in creating a city where people want to live, businesses want to grow and investors have confidence.

Behind much of that work is the City of Atlantic City's Department of Public Works.

Every day, Public Works employees work behind the scenes to keep Atlantic City operating efficiently and looking its best. Their responsibilities touch nearly every aspect of daily life, from collecting trash and maintaining streets to preserving public buildings, repairing infrastructure and ensuring the city's world-famous Boardwalk and beaches remain clean, safe and inviting.

The department's mission is to provide a clean, safe and well-maintained environment for residents, businesses and visitors while preserving the infrastructure that supports Atlantic City's continued growth.

Throughout the year, Public Works maintains hundreds of city streets, storm drains, sidewalks, bridges and public facilities while overseeing engineering services, sanitation, roadway improvements and snow removal. Dedicated crews also maintain nearly 200 traffic signal intersections, decorative lighting, public fountains, Boardwalk comfort stations and city-owned buildings, ensuring essential services continue uninterrupted.

One of the department's most visible responsibilities is caring for Atlantic City's beach and Boardwalk.

Seven days a week, year-round, Public Works crews clean the beaches, remove debris, repair Boardwalk sections, maintain ramps, benches and pavilions, inspect infrastructure and perform countless other tasks that help create a safe and enjoyable experience for the millions of people who visit Atlantic City each year.

The department is equally committed to keeping neighborhoods clean.

Through the annual Clean Communities Initiative, Public Works partners directly with residents to beautify neighborhoods throughout Atlantic City. Each summer, crews conduct ward-by-ward cleanups while providing residents with gloves, trash bags, grabbers and safety vests so they can take part alongside city employees.

The program continues to evolve with new initiatives designed to encourage community participation. A Mobile Recycling Program makes it easier for residents to dispose of electronics, yard waste and scrap metal during their regular collection days, helping reduce illegal dumping and improve neighborhood cleanliness.

Their work may often happen behind the scenes, but its impact is visible throughout the city every day.
