Atlantic City’s rich African American history is receiving statewide recognition. The City’s Black Cultural Heritage Tour has been selected for the Dr. Doris C. Carpenter Excellence Award as part of the 2026 New Jersey Historic Preservation Awards, recognizing an initiative that brings greater attention to the people, places and experiences that helped shape the city’s identity.
Presented by Preservation New Jersey, the annual awards honor individuals, organizations and projects making meaningful contributions to preserving the state’s historic buildings, cultural landscapes and heritage. The Dr. Doris C. Carpenter Excellence Award specifically recognizes efforts that celebrate and interpret African American history and expand public awareness of its lasting impact.
Launched in June 2026, Atlantic City’s Black Cultural Heritage Tour gives residents and visitors an opportunity to explore the city’s history through significant landmarks, including Chicken Bone Beach, Pop Lloyd Stadium, Fire Station No. 2, Saint James AME Church and Sonny’s Barbershop. The interactive digital experience features historical photographs, background information and video testimonials from prominent community members, allowing visitors to explore these important places and stories at their own pace.
The tour was developed through the City’s Planning and Development Department in partnership with Historic Building Architects, LLC and Fish Bowl Media. Its launch coincided with the unveiling of a New Jersey Black Heritage Trail marker at Chicken Bone Beach, a historic gathering place for African Americans during segregation.
The award celebrates the people, businesses, churches and community institutions whose contributions are an essential part of Atlantic City’s story. By making these stories accessible to residents, visitors and future generations, the tour helps preserve an important part of the city’s cultural identity.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the tour and discover the history, people and places that continue to define Atlantic City.
