Atlantic City's beaches are among its greatest assets, and keeping them safe is one of the city's highest priorities.
That responsibility belongs to the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, the first municipally paid professional lifeguard force in the United States. Since its establishment in 1891, the Beach Patrol has built a reputation for excellence, protecting generations of residents and visitors while maintaining one of the nation's most respected ocean safety records.
For more than a century, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol has set the standard for professionalism, preparedness and public service.
That standard begins with training.
Every year, Atlantic City Beach Patrol lifeguards are required to successfully complete rigorous physical testing to ensure they remain in peak condition and are prepared to respond when lives are on the line. These annual qualifications reinforce the department's commitment to maintaining the highest level of readiness and ensuring every guarded beach is staffed by highly trained professionals.
Throughout the peak summer season, every beach is guarded daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving residents and visitors the confidence to enjoy Atlantic City's world-famous beaches knowing skilled lifeguards are always nearby.
The Beach Patrol is also committed to developing the next generation of lifesavers.
Through its Minnow and Junior Lifeguard programs, young people are introduced to water safety, physical fitness, teamwork and the fundamentals of lifesaving long before they are eligible to join the patrol. These programs help prepare future lifeguards while teaching valuable life skills, building confidence and instilling a sense of responsibility and public service.
Many members of today's Beach Patrol began their journey in these youth programs, continuing a proud tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next.
Beyond responding to emergencies, Beach Patrol members educate the public on ocean safety, provide first aid and serve as ambassadors for Atlantic City's beaches. Their professionalism and dedication help create a safe, welcoming environment for everyone enjoying the waterfront.
