Atlantic City's 2025 Summer Season Begins with Traditional Sea Unlocking Ceremony

The City of Atlantic City officially opened its 2025 summer season with the annual “Opening of the Sea” ceremony, led by Mayor Marty Small Sr. Held outside Resorts Casino Hotel, the event marked the ceremonial start of Memorial Day Weekend and the summer festivities.

Mayor Small continued the city’s tradition by unlocking the sea, a symbolic gesture that signals the start of beach and boardwalk season. In his remarks to the crowd, he emphasized the significance of this summer for Atlantic City.

“This summer is going to be one of the biggest summers we’ve had in a very, very, very long time,” Mayor Small told attendees. “And it’s because of the spirit of cooperation between my administration and the casino industry. We are committed now more than ever to make Atlantic City the best place it can be.”

The mayor’s optimism reflected the strong partnership between city leadership and local stakeholders, who have worked together to ensure a safe, exciting, and prosperous season for residents and visitors alike.

Joining Mayor Small at the event were several key city officials and community leaders. These included Atlantic City Police Department Chief James Sarkos, Atlantic City Fire Department Chief and Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Scott Evans, Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey, Public Safety Director Sean Riggin, and Resorts Casino Hotel President and CEO Mark Giannantonio.

Their presence underscored the city’s focus on public safety, emergency preparedness, and community engagement as critical components of the summer season.

The “Opening of the Sea” ceremony has long been a cherished tradition in Atlantic City, celebrating the city’s connection to the ocean and its role as a top summer destination on the East Coast.
