The Uptown School Complex in Atlantic City underwent major capital improvements this summer as part of a district-wide initiative to enhance infrastructure and learning environments. These upgrades marked a transformative phase in the school’s development and demonstrated a deep commitment to student success, safety, and innovation.

Completed projects included the installation of a new roof, significant upgrades to the HVAC and boiler systems, and the replacement of interior doors. Each improvement was aimed at increasing energy efficiency, building sustainability, and maintaining a safe learning space for students and staff alike.

“These capital improvements at Uptown School Complex reflected our district’s ongoing commitment to providing safe spaces where students could learn and thrive,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. La’Quetta S. Small.

While construction was underway, Uptown’s summer school program was temporarily relocated to Pennsylvania Avenue School. This transition created opportunities for stronger inter-school cooperation and led to a shared sense of purpose among educators and families. “I was incredibly proud of the collaboration between our school leaders, teachers, and families to ensure uninterrupted summer learning,” said Dr. Small.

The relocation allowed both schools to jointly launch new initiatives, including a Visual and Performing Arts program. The highlight was a joint production of 101 Dalmatians Kids, which featured a combined cast and creative team. “It helped build camaraderie rather than competition,” said Uptown School Complex Principal Dr. Ananda Davis-Wright.

STEM education also flourished during the summer session. Principal Thomas Biggins of Pennsylvania Avenue School noted that students embraced STEM “not as an assignment, but as a passion.”

Both schools also operated Extended School Year (ESY) programs, which served students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). These programs provided consistency and helped minimize summer learning loss. “It helped keep some of our exceptional students in their routines,” Biggins said.

Throughout the summer, Dr. Davis-Wright managed responsibilities across both sites, beginning her mornings at Uptown to supervise transportation and continuing her day from a temporary office inside Pennsylvania Avenue School’s media center.

The upgrades at Uptown were part of Atlantic City Public Schools’ broader efforts to modernize facilities during the summer break. “These improvements were appreciated by all,” said Davis-Wright. “The **teachers will love it. The students will love it. And it addressed parents’ concerns.”

As the final construction work wrapped up, the spirit of teamwork and adaptability showcased how Atlantic City Public Schools continues to prioritize safety, community, and educational excellence. “It was a massive job,” Davis-Wright said. “You don’t realize how big it is until you watch it taking place.”
