Every city likes to talk about community. In Atlantic City, you get to see it.
It began with tragedy. On June 2, 2026 Atlantic City Police Sgt. Christian Ivanov suffered life-threatening injuries while serving the community he has sworn to protect. In the hours and days that followed, concern grew throughout the city. Residents prayed. Fellow officers stood watch. Messages of support poured in from every corner of the community. During all this, Sgt. Ivanov was just beginning his long road to recovery.
Flash forward a few weeks later, and Sgt. Ivanov got a hero's welcome as he was discharged from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. His fellow police officers, hospital employees, city leaders, family members, friends, and supporters lined sidewalks outside AtlantiCare. There were handshakes, hugs, applause, and plenty of emotion as the officer left the hospital.

Recovery still lies ahead, but this was a celebration of perseverance, faith and gratitude.
This was also a celebration of community. A celebration of the police officers who put themselves in harm's way. A celebration of the doctors and nurses who answer emergency calls at all hours of the day and night. A celebration of the local businesses who donated part of their proceeds to Sgt. Ivanov and his recovery. A celebration of the residents who rally around neighbors they may never have met.
And in a time when genuine displays of unity can feel increasingly rare, Atlantic City offered a powerful example of what they look like.

One night earlier, Atlantic City took time to recognize another group of heroes in this story. During the June City Council meeting, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's trauma team was honored for the role it played in saving the officer's life.
When Ivanov arrived at AtlantiCare's Atlantic City Campus on June 2, every second mattered. The doctors, nurses, surgeons, and trauma specialists who sprang into action that day did what they have done for thousands of patients over the years. They performed their jobs with skill, urgency, and compassion.
For them, it was another day at work. For Sgt. Ivanov, his family, and the Atlantic City Police Department, it meant everything.

"You'll never know how much you guys mean to us," ACPD Chief James Sarkos told the AtlantiCare team during the council meeting. "We are forever indebted to you."
The recovery of Sgt. Ivanov and the community that stood behind him is a heartwarming story that defines what Atlantic City is truly all about.
