The Atlantic City Police Department held a solemn memorial ceremony in honor of fallen K-9 Officer Peter John “Sonny” Burke at the intersection of MLK and Atlantic Avenues in Atlantic City.
K-9 Officer Burke was tragically gunned down while on duty at that very intersection 55 years ago. Though decades have passed, his memory continued to live on through the Atlantic County K-9 Academy, which was named in his honor.
As one of the first officers to join the newly established K-9 force, Officer Burke left behind a lasting legacy of bravery and dedication. His commitment to service inspired generations of officers who followed in his footsteps.
The memorial ceremony was attended by several recruits from the John “Sonny” Burke Police K-9 Academy, representing the continuation of his work and the strength of the program built in his name.
Dignitaries and leaders in public safety also paid their respects. Attendees included Chief James Sarkos, Public Safety Director Sean Riggin, and Deputy Chiefs Christian Garofalo and Andrew Leonard, each recognizing the enduring impact of Officer Burke’s service and sacrifice.
A ceremonial wreath was dedicated by AC PBA Local 24 President Jules Schwenger, and placed beneath the street sign for Officer John “Sonny” Burke Avenue, ensuring his legacy remains a visible reminder for the community.
Adding a deeply personal touch to the event, three of K-9 Officer Burke’s brothers attended the ceremony. Among them, Greg Burke delivered an emotional speech, moving the crowd with heartfelt words of remembrance and love.
The gathering stood as a testament to the enduring respect and admiration for Officer Burke’s courage, as well as the unbreakable bond between the department, the academy, and the community he served. The memorial not only honored the past but also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to keeping alive the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. By remembering K-9 Officer Peter John “Sonny” Burke, the Atlantic City Police Department ensured that his legacy of service and sacrifice would continue to inspire future generations.
