A year after the grand opening of Uptown Skate Park, the community space continues to evolve, proving that it was never just about skateboarding.
The latest addition to the park came when local artists Nick Merlino and Mike Friars completed vibrant murals on the sides of the skate ramps, bringing to life a design selected directly by the community through a public voting process. Funded through a grant from the Inlet Community Development Corporation with support from Atlantic Cape Community College, the artwork features uplifting messages such as "Free Your Mind" and "AC Heals," transforming the park into an even more dynamic and inspiring public space.

The murals reflect the vision that helped create Uptown Skate Park in the first place, centered on community pride, creativity, wellness, and giving residents a space they can truly call their own.
When the skate park opened in August 2025 at Melrose and Massachusetts Avenues, it marked the transformation of an underutilized lot into one of Atlantic City's newest recreational destinations. The project immediately provided local youth and families with a safe, welcoming place to gather, stay active, and connect with one another.
Since its opening, the park has become exactly what its supporters hoped it would be: a community hub. On any given day, visitors can be found skateboarding, exercising, socializing, creating content, admiring artwork, or simply enjoying time outdoors. The park has welcomed beginners learning their first tricks, experienced skaters sharpening their skills, and residents looking for a positive place to spend time with friends and family.

That success is a testament to the collaboration that brought the project to life. Community advocates, local organizations, residents, and supporters worked together to create a space that serves far more than one purpose.
The addition of public art only strengthens that mission.
For Atlantic City Recreation and the team at Skate AC, skateparks are places where people gather, build relationships, express themselves creatively, improve their physical and mental well-being, and develop a stronger connection to their neighborhood. The new murals reinforce those values while adding another layer of identity to a park that has quickly become an important community asset.
As Atlantic City continues investing in parks, recreation, public spaces, and quality-of-life improvements, Uptown Skate Park stands as an example of what can happen when a project is shaped by community input and sustained by community involvement.
