
For more than three decades, Ernest D. Coursey, Sr. was a prominent force in Atlantic City and Atlantic County politics, building a career defined by public service, advocacy, and a deep connection to the community he called home.
A lifelong Atlantic City resident and graduate of Atlantic City High School, Coursey entered public service in 1991 when he was elected as the Third Ward Councilman. He went on to win reelection three times, serving on Atlantic City Council until 2002. During his time on Council, Coursey served as both Council President and Council Vice President, establishing himself as a strong and independent voice for Atlantic City residents.
His political career continued well beyond City Council. Coursey served as Deputy Mayor under Mayor Lorenzo T. Langford and later served as Superintendent of Surf Stadium and Bader Field. He also brought his experience to the federal level as an aide to U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli and served as a commissioner with the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
Coursey's influence expanded across Atlantic County when he was elected Atlantic County Commissioner for District 1 in 2013. He was subsequently reelected in 2016, 2019 and 2022, ultimately serving four terms representing the district.
Coursey returned to Atlantic City government in his final years of public service, serving as Chief of Staff to Mayor Marty Small, Sr. His career reflected a rare breadth of experience, moving between municipal, county, state and federal levels while maintaining a consistent focus on Atlantic City and its residents.
Known for his independent spirit, willingness to challenge the status quo and ability to connect with people, Coursey became a recognizable and influential figure in Atlantic City politics. His career also represents an important chapter in the city's Black political history, reflecting the growing influence and leadership of African Americans in Atlantic City government and public life.
Coursey passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 62. One year later, his legacy was formally enshrined in the city he served when Atlantic City City Hall was dedicated in his honor in August 2026. The dedication ensures that the name Ernest D. Coursey, Sr. will remain permanently connected to the institution where he spent so much of his life serving the people of Atlantic City.
